Stop paying sales reps to do data entry
Most of a rep's week goes to building lists, research, writing emails and logging activity. Here is what that costs, and what reps should do instead.
A sales rep is one of the most expensive people on the payroll, and one of the few whose work brings revenue in directly. Most of their week goes to something else.
Add up a week for a rep who runs their own outbound, and selling is the smallest part of it.
Where the week goes
Before a single conversation happens, someone has to:
- Build the list. Find companies that fit, then the right people inside each one.
- Find contact details. Look up an email address for every person.
- Research each person. Read the website, the funding news, the job posts and the LinkedIn profile.
- Write the emails. A first email and four follow-ups for every person, each one written for them.
- Send and follow up. Schedule every step, and stop the moment someone replies.
- Log everything. Record each email, reply and call so the next person knows what happened.
Here is an example week:
| Work | Hours |
|---|---|
| Building lists and finding contact details | 7 |
| Researching each person | 6 |
| Writing emails | 8 |
| Sending and following up | 3 |
| Logging activity | 5 |
| Selling: calls, LinkedIn and meetings | 11 |
| Total | 40 |
Twenty-nine of the forty hours go to work around the sale. Eleven, or 28% of the week, go to selling. Every task in those 29 hours is necessary, and none of it needs a rep's judgment, voice or relationships.
What it costs
A rep's cost is mostly their time. When 72% of the time goes to work that isn't selling, so does 72% of the cost.
| Example | |
|---|---|
| Fully loaded cost per rep | $120,000 a year |
| Share of the week not selling | 72% |
| Cost of non-selling work per rep | $86,400 a year |
| Team of 10 reps | $864,000 a year |
Put in your own cost per rep and the share stays the same. That $864,000 buys lists, lookups, drafts and data entry. It doesn't buy a single conversation.
The work only a rep can do
Buyers trust people. Some work can't be handed to software, because the person doing it is the point:
- Phone calls. A live conversation moves faster than any email thread. A rep hears the hesitation, asks the next question and books the meeting on the spot.
- LinkedIn relationships. Commenting on a prospect's post, congratulating them on a new role, sending a short note after they reply. From a real person, it builds familiarity before the first meeting.
- Meetings. Discovery, demos, negotiation and closing are where deals are won, and they need someone who can read the room.
- Meeting people in person. Events, dinners and site visits turn a contact into a relationship.
These are the hours that should fill a rep's week. They're also the first hours to get squeezed when the list, the inbox and the data entry come first.
Split the work
- Building lists of companies that fit
- Finding the right people and their emails
- Researching every person
- Writing every email
- Sending and following up
- Reading replies and booking meetings
- Logging every touch
- Phone calls
- LinkedIn relationships
- Discovery and demos
- Negotiating and closing
- Meeting people in person
The line is simple. Work that repeats at volume goes to agents. Work that depends on trust stays with people.
What changes for the rep
When agents take the manual work, a rep's day starts with replies instead of a blank list. Each reply comes with the research behind it: who the person is, what their company is doing and what the emails said. The rep picks up the phone with context, follows up on LinkedIn with something specific to say, and walks into meetings that are already booked.
The hours that went to typing go to talking.
How Leadgenerator.io splits it
In Leadgenerator.io, agents find companies that fit and the right people inside them, find their emails, research each person and write every email from that research. They send from warmed mailboxes on separate sending domains, follow up on schedule, read the replies and book the meetings. Every email, reply and meeting lands on the company's timeline, so nobody types it in.
Reps take the meetings, make the calls and build the relationships. On Copilot they approve the drafts before anything goes out, and on Autopilot the agents run end to end.
Let the agents run the volume.
Leadgenerator.io finds the people, researches each one, writes every email, sends from warmed mailboxes and books the meetings.
